Welcome to the Archives of The British Astronomical Association

The British Astronomical Association (BAA) was formed in 1890, and membership has always been open to anybody interested in Astronomy. Over that time the BAA has developed, and is proud of, an international reputation for the quality of its observational work, much of which is of great scientific value.

The BAA is organised into a number of sections, and a member can join any or all of them depending on their particular interests. A Journal has been published since 1890 and is now published six times a year. There has also been an annual handbook produced since 1922. In addition there have been circulars etc to keep members informed of the latest developments. Much of this can be found within the main website of the BAA at https://britastro.org

Since 1890 there have been meetings of the BAA Council and more recently the BAA Trustees, with minutes recorded for members to see if they so wished. And also since 1890 members have donated/bequeathed many things which have included their observational record books, photos, slides etc etc as well as many artifacts. It is an exhaustive list and it is the purpose of this archive website to eventually allow anyone to be able to browse or research from this.

The picture (top right) is of the BAA office located at the home of former Assistant Secretary Lydia Brown, in Hounslow West, sometime before 1970. The artist’s name was Sidney Stanley.
